links about LACK & DESIRE

This week the selection circles around the theme of lack, desire, and lust. i’m not a lacanian by any means. in fact, i have trouble placing myself in a camp of any kind. that probably means i am… a liberal. good god.

we’ve all noticed that the youngins are experimenting with mid-2000s aesthetics. it is making me feel old and washed lowkey. ipod commercials. tank tops. wired headphones. optimism. it was all unironic to me. that was my life. now… i must appreciate it through an ironic, historical lens so as to not have chopped unc vibes. you will also one day realise that time comes for us all.

TEXT

In Defense of the Silhouette by and

i just honestly can’t believe that the word silhouette comes from a french man named silhouette! is this a joke?

the text, which has GONE VIRAL!!!!! on instagram, is about silhouettes in contemporary visual culture. the authors read the re-emergence of silhouettes as a design element through historical and theoretical frameworks.

i learned a lot of new things reading this.

SOUND

Modern Lust by Oneohtrix Point Never

I tried to watch Marty Supreme on netflix recently, and I had do exit the tab immediately because i got incredibly cringed out by the opening scene. but the soundtrack to the scene was just so good, and i remembered the opn did the OST for this movie. everything he does is 10/10. so I thought I’d recommend something from his 2025 album Tranquilizer. not the OST because I still have to sit through the movie first.

VIDEO

Anayurt Oteli directed by Ömer Kavur

I was trying to find a film to recommend around the theme of “lack”, and I remembered this one: a challenging film that takes on some taboo subjects. so if you have a low threshold for that kind of stuff just don’t watch it. it is adapted from a book by the same name, written by a pioneering Turkish novelist Yusuf Atılgan. it is available fully on youtube, so if you are a person who can watch foreign movies with auto generated subtitles than you’ll love this one. Türkçe biliyorsanız zaten izleyiniz arkadaşlar. kıymetli bir eser.
