I Tested Gen Z’s Basic Computer Skills
This Noel Miller video is a (poorly designed) experiment testing some Gen Z people on assembling a PC. It’s nevertheless an interesting look at the problem-solving and motor skills of people who grew up mainly using one kind of computing machine: the smartphone.
Some questions that came up for me as I watched the video were: what kinds of schema do smartphone power users form, and how adaptable are these schema to other devices? Should computer classes and labs be adapted and re-introduced into early education? Are “computer skills” as we know them basically irrelevant for most people? Must Gen Z know what a mini DIN connector does?
The funniest part of the video for me was how quickly conspiracy theories emerged in the group when they hit a roadblock (around 4:53 mark). Young folks these days…
